We have had several cases of what we and the local veterinarians believe is kennel cough (Bordetella) all dogs involved were vaccinated. I have spoken to many of our local veterinarians and they are advising that this is a very contagious illness and can spread rapidly. Bordetella is not generally a serious illness, however if you suspect your dog may be ill please keep them home a minimum of one week and seek veterinary care immediately. Most cases of Bordetella resolve in two weeks with or without antibiotics, this is simply a dog cold. Sometimes as with the human flu for example, the recommendations of which strain to vaccinate for are wrong and we have breakthrough illness. Some symptoms to keep an eye out for are:
Dry heaving
Watery nasal discharge
Wheezing
In mild cases, dogs ae often still active and eating normally. We are sorry to be the bearer of this news, but rest assured we are using all cleaning and quarantine protocols available.
